Do You Know What They're Whispering?
A fascinating issue popped up on my Winners Circle radio show Saturday. It prompts me to ask: Do you know what they're whispering about you?

Context and Purpose
On Friday, I had two MSU freshmen on my radio show. They were graduates of a marvelous middle and high school program called the Art of Leadership.* One facet of that program is that the young people write a personal life vision statement.

Raising Kids, Picasso and SuperLeadership
A book by Sims and Manz called SuperLeadership grabbed me! By "super," they meant really great, but they also meant super, from the Latin meaning above, i.e., leaders above leaders. Their whole idea, which has become way more popular since then, was simple: great leaders make followers into leaders themselves.

Get Crazy and Bring Someone Along With You
In 9 hours, 50 swimmers will enter the Straits to swim the four-mile distance from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to Mackinaw City in the Lower Peninsula. Hopefully, the wind will diminish and allow the white caps to settle and smooth, so the swimmers can enter. Even if the waters are calm, the currents beneath will make the four-mile swim in 60-degree waters seem much further.

Sometimes You Win When You Lose
Today's story reflects my hard-won victory over... well, over me. It was grueling — like a 5-set tennis match. And, like a lot of my wins in the world of self-management and other-leadership, I’ll forget how I pulled out a win, why such a win is worth the effort, and how to do it again. I hope replaying it will contribute to my, and perhaps your, future wins.

Managing the Risks of Candid Feedback
Last week, I wrote about the refreshing quality of Bill Ford's candor. As one reader put it, If Mr. Ford had difficulties in changing the culture, where is the hope for others? She wrote that candor creates peace of mind, but those who express it compromise their career growth because the existing culture does not accept them.

Friends, Candor may be one of the most powerful tools in the leadership arsenal. How remarkable when a teenage child straight up tells you the unsolicited truth. Trust is born.

Corporate Boardroom in the Woods
We were at a
“ropes course” in the woods. Ten adults. Five pairs of two: one was blindfolded
and the other was sighted, and their job was to get the blindfolded partner
through a maze of ropes, laid out among the trees.
